Chapter 317
Evelyn shook her head. "No. Everyone who saw Winifred said she was fine. No one knew how she got the knife."
"Wasn't there a guard?"
"No."
Evelyn had her answer, and her mind raced. Someone must have slipped into the interrogation room without supervision.
Seeing her still troubled, Chloe smiled reassuringly. "Relax, Zoe. We’ll handle it."
Once Chloe left, Evelyn leaned back in her chair, picking up the shattered jade ring. Though she suspected Rosalind had damaged it, Nathan had given it to her—so she resolved to restore it.
That evening, Evelyn headed to the underground garage. Just as she reached her car, a figure stepped into her space. She instinctively raised her hand, only to be swiftly pinned against the car by a familiar grip.
Nathan smirked. "Trying to ambush me?"
Evelyn exhaled in relief. "You’re the one sneaking up on me."
He dipped his head, brushing his lips against hers, amusement in his eyes. "What kind of spell did you cast? It’s only been a day, and I already missed you."
He had seen their names trending together all day—finally, they were publicly acknowledged as fiancés.
Evelyn pushed him lightly. "Stop fooling around. Someone might see."
"Nobody’s here." Nathan took her hand, his gaze landing on the repaired jade ring. Surprise flickered across his face.
"Zoe, you didn’t—"
He hadn’t expected her to fix it. Though altered from its original form, the restoration was flawless.
Pride swelled in his chest.
Evelyn turned her face away, feigning annoyance. "Even if I didn’t like that someone else wore it first, you bought it for me. I had to keep it."
Nathan’s expression softened. He tilted her chin up. "Next time, I’ll get you one only you’ll wear."
She smirked, then remembered something. "Aren’t you worried your grandfather will be furious about the news?"
Theodore Goldmann disapproved of her ties to the de Armas family—hence Rosalind’s presence. Evelyn wasn’t a Luxe employee, yet Nathan had brought her to the meeting. If she knew Theodore, he was probably seething.
Nathan chuckled. "That’s what’s bothering you?"
Evelyn huffed. "I have enough problems. I don’t need another."
Their last confrontation with Theodore had already been tense.
Nathan scoffed, tracing the corner of her eye. "Since when does the Zoe I know back down from trouble?"
At the Goldmann Mansion
Theodore glowered at the untouched plates before the three children. "Have you forgotten how to eat without your father and grandfather here?"
Rosalind offered helpfully, "What would you like? I’ll serve you."
But as she handed a bowl to Daisy, the child "accidentally" knocked it over—scalding soup splashing onto Rosalind’s hand.
Mr. Chester gasped.
Theodore’s expression darkened. These children had been spoiled for too long. He snapped at Daisy, "Apologize to Aunt Rosalind!"
